Onegaishimasu Parents,
Over the past few weeks, we’ve talked about keeping kids learning over the summer. But just as important is building memories and family connections.
Think back—what summer memories from your childhood still stay with you? Those moments stick because they were tied to strong emotions. Deep emotional experiences—belly laughs, tears, adventures—help shape a child’s development and create a rich, connected life.
Unfortunately, many kids today miss out. Too much screen time robs them of real-world experiences and, more importantly, one-on-one human connection. Shared moments amplify joy—imagine riding a rollercoaster alone vs. with 12 of your best friends screaming beside you!
So what can you do?
Limit Screen Time: Make it intentional and controlled.
Quality over Quantity: Be fully present. Put away the phone, do new things, let your kids help plan adventures.
Make Memories & Magic Moments: They don’t need to be fancy. Catch fireflies, run in the rain, go camping, explore Ontario or Quebec, or take a short trip. Often, the “mishaps” become the funniest memories.
Create Traditions: Family identity is shaped by culture and traditions. Start something new—an annual trip, reunion, or simple ritual you repeat every summer.
Get your kids involved and make this summer unforgettable.
Summer is short… and their childhood is even shorter!
